HUNTING SEASON IS OVER SO THE HORSES ARE DOWN IN THE MEADOW

We keep our horses up in the corrals during hunting season.  After it is over we fix the fences that the elk and deer have tore up then turn the horses back out so they can go down into the meadow which is the only place we can irrigate on our property.  The elk don't tear down the fences unless they are really spooked or panicked.  Then they sometimes don't even jump fences they just run through them.  Over at the ranch we worked on in the Centennial Valley we had to repair one section of fence where the elk broke off six fence posts when running in a panic.  This year we had to repair a lot of broken wire and only two steel fence posts were broken off.  So with the fence being fixed enough to hold our horses, we turned them out of the corrals and boy were they happy to get out of there.  They still come up at least once a day to get water out of the automatic heated water tanks in the corrals, but for the most part we do not see them except when feeding.

Free at last, free at last.  Connie's eventing horse leading the charge down to the meadow.

Throw out a little hay and they all settle down.

And meanwhile back at the house, the barn cat is sleeping in my grandmother's chair by the fire. She doesn't catch many mice but truly enjoys her naps when we let her in during the winter.
