AJO AREA

We are down in the Ajo area right now.  Just spent 5 days out in the desert with no internet so that is why I have not updated the blog.  We left Gila Bend and drove down to the IGA store here in Ajo thinking we might be able to score some tamales and burritos from the lady who used to sell them by the front door.  But alas, she was not there.  The check out girl said she is no longer selling them there.  Last time we were here was 2 years ago so things do change.  Anyway, we bought a few groceries and some ready made chicken fajitas - all you had to do was cook them.  And that is what we had for supper the first night and they were excellent.

We first camped off a spur road in a place we have camped before.  The wind blew the first couple of days we were here and it was pretty cool the first morning, 37 degrees cool!!!  That is not what we usually get down here.  But the days have warmed up considerably.  We moved camp further south after a couple of days.  There are just a few flowers blooming down here.  Spring is really late.

Been doing some great biking down though.  We rode for three hours one day.  Much better riding here than it was at Kofa.  Glad we brought them down.

Rode out to a windmill and watering tank.  Some corrals here so made us feel right at home.

Connie in a bunch of "jumping cholla".

A great bike riding road.

If you look close, you can see a pretty mangy looking coyote.  He ran right in front of me while riding.  Connie had the camera in her pack and so had to wait for her to get up to me.
Who would think you would find a cemetery out in the middle of the desert.  A very pretty one I might add.

A barrel cactus.

Top of a fish hook cactus.

A fairy duster flower.

This cactus has a lot of spines.  You can see the buds coming so it will bloom in about a month or less.

Sunrise from one of our camps.

A very tall saguaro.

The farthest mountains you can see are in Mexico.

A small cactus.

A couple of pictures of Ocitillo blooms.

The humming birds really like the flowers on this bush.

Our last camp.

Same camp from a hill to the west.  Our camper looks pretty small there in the lower right hand corner.  We like to camp away from campgrounds!!!  Click any picture so make them larger.

This old truck still is a working truck.  They are cleaning up a watering tank area and have dismantled the windmill and other structures.  The truck is used to load the material on trailer to haul out.  They still have a storage tank though.

A couple more pics of the truck.

Pretty good cracks in the windshield.

This is the only cactus we have seen in bloom.  I found it when hiking up the hill behind camp.
