7 September 2016: We
got up early and headed to Silverton to start our journey on the “Alpine
Loop”. The views were all just
spectacular and the road was not too bad; just a little rough in spots, but not
as bad as Scotch Creek over by Rico! The
weather was great and we all had a good time.
Ben really got into all the controls of the rent a jeep and seemed to
always be smiling. We all were
really. They had to turn the jeep back
in by 5pm that night so we split up in the mid afternoon and they took a shorter route back to Ouray
while Connie and I completed the loop back to Silverton. Now this is where the story gets
interesting. We got back to Ouray and
stopped at the Ouray Brewery to have a beer.
Connie text the cousins to see if they got back to the rental place in
time so they would not be charged a late fee. No answer. Just as we were really starting to get concerned
they finally sent us a message. They had
gotten lost but some folks helped them out and got them on the right road. So it all ended well and we had a great time - and the jeep rental place did not charge them for being late which was nice.

We went over a lot of passes on this drive. |
|
Above timberline a lot of the time. |
|
Lots of old abandon mines. |
|
Some places have been restored that have a significant historic value. |
|
Always climbing or descending. |
|
A band of sheep at the top of one pass. |
|
What a view. |
|
Fall colors already starting to show. |
