2018 ROUNDUP PART THREE

The third day of the roundup we brought the cows out of the field close to the corrals at the Monte Kent cow camp and took them to the corrals to separate the cows from the calves and load the calves on semi trucks to be taken to their respective destinations.

Pushing the cows and calves to the corrals into the sun.

Spent a lot of time in my saddle pushing cows up into the alley way for sorting.  And sometimes just waiting so took a picture of the saddle and my grinning dog wanting to be petted.

The cows that have been separated from their calves.  It was a very dusty day as no rain or snow for awhile.

The horses tied up waiting for the sorting to get done.

We even fed some of the truckers.

2018 ROUNDUP PART TWO

DOWN NEAR THE CORRALS

The second day of the gather consisted of gathering the cows up again from the smaller pasture and driving them down to a field close to the corrals.  We had two crews working: one gathered the old cows from the day before and the second gathered the 2 and 3 year old cows with their calves from a field next to where the old cows were.

ROUNDUP 2018 PART ONE

Connie and I headed over to the Centennial Valley last week to help with the Martinell Ranch roundup.  We have been helping with this ranching tradition since 1992.  And it is always early morning get ups way before light starts to show up in the east, long days in the saddle, and hard work - but it is always fun and enjoyable being around that family.  The first day we gather the cows out of about 19 sections of pasture (about 5 miles by 4 miles) much of which is state land and put them in a smaller pasture.  The second day they are again rounded up and put into a smaller pasture near the corrals.  The third day all are brought into the corrals where the cows are separated from the calves and and the calves are separated by their sex and put in different pens. Then the calves are put in trucks and the steer calves are taken to a feedlot and the heifer calves are put in trucks and taken down to the ranch head quarters and later kept as replacement heifers or sold. The fourth day the cows are taken back up to the pastures they came out of.  The whole family is involved in this operation and others like Connie and I and the range riders help.

ETHAN AND DANA AND KIDS #2

I did not get all the pictures put in my first post so this is what was left of my pictures.  We sure enjoyed our visit with them and hope they had a good time.
