RAIN IN THE DESERT

We spent the last 4 days at Kofa National Wildlife Refuge just north and east of Yuma.  The road that we take to our favorite camping in the area was really rough so it took us a while to get to it.  It took us over an hour to go 5 miles coming out this morning.  And it was really raining.  Oh yes, sunny desert weather we have today.  We drove east to Gila Bend where we are staying at the Air Force Auxilary base's Famcamp.  Good place to get laundry done, water fill up, and dump the camper before we head back out into the desert.  And you can't beat the price - $7.00 for full hookup!

We did do some cruising around Kofa the last few days though.  The wildflowers are just NOT happening yet though.  We did see a few poppies while driving to the Burro Canyon tanks, very few, like three!!  The desert marigolds are starting to bloom though.  Spring is just late I guess.  And it quite cool.  Only 42 this morning and with the wind and rain, it felt colder.  We did see a lot of standing water along side the road driving here today.  Don't see that to often.

A few pictures from the last few days.  Click on the picture to enlarge.

Sunset.

This is a Teddy Bear Cactus or Jumping Cactus - can't remember right now.  Birds make nests in them as in the picture below shows.

These are the springs that feed the tanks.

Some nice moss growing in them.

The water flows over most rocks then disappears into the sand only to emerge again.

This has been a water fall only one time that we have seen.  I am sitting in a pocket that also contains  water.
